A finely worked and very decorative cabinet in the manner of Charles Topino. The cabinet top of pietre dure inlaid in a symmetrical and geometric pattern of various coloured hardstones, above a frieze applied with a sprig-filled entrelac band over a panel inlaid with assorted motifs associated with the written word and including a sealed envelope with postmark reading ‘Paris 11 Avril 1789’, the lower door with a guilloche-cast moulding and a panel inlaid with ribbon-tied flowering branches and vases within slender canted front corners on short cabriole feet.

Charles Topino (c.1742-1803) was one of the few important French furniture-makers working in Paris during the last years of the ancien régime. He made furniture of great elegance and charm, specialising in small pieces and developing a distinct style of marquetry which was most certainly influenced by the motifs employed in 17th Century Chinese coromandel lacquer - for example, vases of flowers, teapots and teacups. The coming of the French Revolution in 1789 precipitated the closure of Topino’s Paris workshop.
