A silver plate mounted horse hoof inkwell, the lid and horseshoe of silver plate, the hinged lid opening to the glass inkwell with silver plate collar, with a decorative pen rest above, the the hoof with good feathered detail around the coronet band, maker’s mark beneath to Rowland Ward & Co, Naturalists, 166 Piccadilly.

James Rowland Ward (1848–1912), a British taxidermist, founded the firm Rowland Ward Limited of Piccadilly, London in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The firm took great pride in their knowledge and careful observation of natural history specimens. their premises was known as ‘The Jungle’ .
More than any other taxidermist of his age, Rowland Ward became known for making items from skins, horns, and skulls that could be used in the home, either for practical purposes or as decorations - items highly fashionable and desirable in late Victorian England.
