19th Century Bronze of a Horse and Serpent on Marble Base

£3,750.00

This striking Grand Tour Equestrian Bronze depicts a terrifying confrontation between a horse and a snake, the horse rearing up to escape the serpent about to strike, poised for the kill. The imagery of a serpent or snake, traditionally associated with, among other things, evil and tyranny, has immediately obvious connotations of good vs evil.

This type of scenario has been seen in artworks such as ‘The horse and the snake’, by Bénigne Gagnereaux 1756 -1795 and ‘The Moment’ by James Ward 1831. with both pieces looking to represent the turmoil of the time.

The piece shows lovely detailing and is enhanced by its elevation on a heavily veined marble base.

Height (dimensions include marble base) : 29.5 cm (11.6 inches)

Width: 26 cm (10.2 inches)

Depth: 11 cm (4.3 inches)
