At the beginning of the 19th Century French glass makers looked for inspiration across the Channel for the styles originated by English craftsmen, and began producing quite heavy weight glass pieces most beautifully decorated by skilful and elaborate cutting. Additional ornamentation on some of these pieces - vases in particular - was achieved by the French master metal workers employing their consummate skill to give vases and urns mounts, bases, rims and handles in gilt-bronze. a material in which they achieved exceptional results . Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) is recognised as the master bronze-worker of this period and occasionally ornamented glass in this manner. All craftsmen delighting in the decorative possibilities of the combination of gilded metal and glittering glass facets, especially when enhanced by candle light.
